Time, Motorcycles & Bikes Built Better

By the early 2000s my work had shifted in a direction I never expected.

Dealer installations were no longer the center of my work. Instead, I was building websites, maintaining computers, and helping small companies navigate a rapidly changing digital world through WebGraphicsRus and later eMaxAds.

The work was steady, but it also left me with something I had not had in years.

Time.

That time brought motorcycles back into my life in a bigger way. Riding led to new friendships and new conversations, many of them taking place over coffee, in garages, or while working on machines after a long day.

One of those friendships was with Joe Heffernan. We met during that transitional period in life when both of us were rebuilding in different ways. Joe ran a successful commercial real estate business in Horsham known as Babylon Campus, but like many riders he also had a deep interest in motorcycles and the power-sports world.

Our friendship grew through riding and through the kind of projects that tend to happen when two people spend time around tools and machines. I helped Joe with some computer work and small technology projects for his business, and over time we spent more and more time working on motorcycles for friends in his garage.

The idea for something larger came together on April 7, 2004.

Joe approached me with a simple proposal. He believed there was room for a motorcycle service shop built around quality work and honest customer service rather than trends or hype. He had the business experience and the resources to get something started. I had the mechanical background, the time, and the desire to build something meaningful.

That same day I registered the domain BikesBuiltBetter.com.

At first the work was informal. We helped friends and fellow riders with repairs and custom projects. One of the first projects we tackled during those early garage days became known as the Winigma Project, a custom motorcycle build that grew out of experimentation and problem solving. Word spread quickly. By the following year it was clear that if we wanted to continue growing, we needed a proper commercial location.

After looking at several buildings we found one that seemed almost made for the purpose at 133 Horsham Road.

On June 5, 2005, Bikes Built Better opened its doors.

In the early days I ran the shop during the week while continuing to maintain my web and IT clients. Joe joined me in the evenings after his work at Babylon Campus. The shop grew slowly but steadily. Our philosophy was simple.

Motorcycle service done the right way.
By riders, for riders.

The motorcycle industry at the time was dominated by the chopper craze. New shops were appearing everywhere, many focused more on fashion than function. Our goal was different. We wanted to bring back something that had always mattered in the motorcycle community.

Good work. Fair treatment. Real service.

Over time the shop grew into a place where riders trusted us with their machines and where friendships formed just as naturally as business relationships.

Along the way there were memorable projects, industry changes, and economic challenges that tested every small business in the country. Through it all the shop continued to evolve.

What began as an idea between two friends in a garage had become something real.

And the journey was far from over.
